D’origine hongroise Béla Bartok (1881-1945) a composé Mikrokosmos en 1940, pour son fils Peter. Les 153 pièces de Mikrokosmos sont divisées en six volumes, de difficulté croissante, composées dans un but pédagogique. Bartok décrit Mikrokosmos comme un cycle de morceaux pour le piano écrit dans un but didactique, dans beaucoup de styles différents, représentant un petit monde, ou « les monde des petits, les enfants ».
